At the Frye Institute

Room With A ViewMy blogging (not to mention my podcasts) is likely to be irregular over the next two weeks as I attend the Frye Leadership Institute in Atlanta, Georgia. By “irregular” I mean, of course, in terms of schedule, not in terms of my famously loose editorial control, which is “regular then most, when most irregular it seems,” to crib without scruple from John Milton.

I have a wonky wireless connection in my otherwise most comfortable room, but here’s a photo anyway of the lovely oaken view from my big window. The view might elicit some chiding. I’m hoping it also elicits some inspiration.

  1. Hope you have a great time at Frye! A number of folks at Richmond have gone in years past, and they always come back raving about the Institute. I’ll be curious to get your take.

It is a bit surprising that the network isn’t more robust – I don’t know if NLII (now ELI) and other conferences have spoiled me, but I would at least have expected ethernet in the room.

  2. Gardner!
You’re at the Frye? Say hello to Uli and do your best to beat the 2004 record Frye babies at late night talk talk talk and drinking.
(the brews in the bar are scandalously expensive. make friends with the bell desk and have someone do a run each night 😉

I find that exhilarating conversation all day can be exhausting. Laughter and forming bonds that will last a lifetime beats blogging in your room anyday. If you can, promise yourself not to miss the weekend river running. A few of us from last year still talk about writing a leadership article on the experience.

    Jealous. Wistful. Full of memories.

  3. Kevin,

As far as I can tell, the wired ethernet is ten bucks a day, and the wireless is free. I’m dealing with the wonkiness, and doing some work downstairs where I’m closer to the bars–of wireless strength, that is.

So far, the Institute is just fine: exceeding my expectations. Just hearing the biographies of the Deans inspires me to think there’s no one path in these careers.

    Colleen,

I had lunch with Uli and another Frye-er today–long and stimulating conversations. I’ll give him your greetings, and remember your advice about the Frye babies. I find I need the retreat to the room to recharge my intro batteries so my extra is rarin’ to go on the morrow. But that may change as the Institute marches on…. This is an intense experience, just like I like ’em. 🙂

Having a wonderful time; wish you were here!

  4. Gardner,

I found myself here after checking for our hypothetical institution stuff. Hope you don’t mind.

Ethernet in our rooms is paid for by Frye, according to one of the messages Betsey sent out months ago. So just go for it. It’s also a little wonky, but it works most of the time, and is pretty fast when it does.

Also, I just came up from the drinking in the (expensive) bar scene. Definitely worth some energy. Like you, I need to retreat for recharging too. Very important. But still, drinking and talking…. hard to beat.

  5. Don’t mind at all; welcome the contact, in fact. Thanks for the reminder re ethernet, and the encouragement re bar. Tomorrow!

I’m still fooling with the wiki and should have it operational soon. I’ll wait till tomorrow to put in the relevant info from the foam board; slumber calls. 🙂

    Cheers.
