A cautionary salutary song for a Monday morning, for all who, like me, can use it:
Some folks see the world as a stone
Concrete dashed in dull monotone
Your heart is the big box of paints
And others, the canvas we’re dealt
Your heart is the big box of paints
How coloured the flowers all smelled
As they huddled there, in petalled prayer
They told me this, as I knelt there
Awaken you dreamers
Adrift in your beds
Balloons and streamers
Decorate the inside of your heads
Please let some out
Do it today
But don’t let the loveless ones sell you
A world wrapped in grey
Some folks pull this life like a weight
Drab and dragging dreams made of slate
Your heart is the big box of paints
And others, the canvas we’re dealt
Your heart is the big box of paints
Just think how the old masters felt, they call…
Awaken you dreamers
Asleep at your desks
Parrots and lemurs
Populate your unconscious grotesques
Please let some out
Do it today
Don’t let the loveless ones sell you
A world wrapped in grey
And in the very least you can
Stand up naked and
Grin
“Wrapped In Grey,” by Andy Partridge, from the XTC album Nonsuch
You know I love this, and your timing is impeccable. Thanks for this.
What a beautiful song! I read the lyrics before I listened to it, and the melody didn’t match the melody in my head, but that wasn’t necessary a bad thing. The lyrics really are quite hopeful though. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
@Andy I played the song as I was getting dressed, and I was so overwhelmed I had to put it in here, just had to. For me, this is “Chalkhills and Children” part two, and both those songs help me get up some steep places when I feel my legs going out from under me. Really glad it came at a good time for you. BTW, great interview with your namesake Mr. Partridge here.
@Jenny More XTC for us to share! It completely made my day to have you comment here (a little birdie told me she’d shared the link with you). First time! I hope it’s not the last. It is a wonderful song, optimistic indeed, and all the better for it since it looks the bad stuff square in the eye. No world wrapped in grey for us. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Love you!
Lovely, Lovely, Lovely! (I have a limited vocabulary)
Love XTC. Don’t see enough blogs about them!
This songs seems to mimic a lot of things that I just can’t seem to put my finger on. It’s just too hard to reduce it to writing at this point. It reminds me of a country song with its tales of woe. Yet, it is also very flowery, like a sappy love poem. And even more than that, it is poetic. Great find Dr. C/Gardner. Kudos to you!
How do I upload a pic?
